What is Polycarbonate?

Polycarbonate is one of the newer plastics to be used in the construction industry around the world. MODEK has been closely involved with the manufacture and distribution of profiled polycarbonate roof sheeting in South Africa and neighbouring countries for the past 15 years. We use the highest grade polycarbonate polymer available and modern co-extrusion technology, ensuring a high product quality and allowing for any transportable length of sheet to be made. Modek polycarbonate is available in a range of popular colours and profiles.

“Transparent steel” is a popular tagline for the product as it is extremely impact resistant (some versions of the product can even be walked on) without losing flexibility. There are however several reasons why discerning roofing companies, home owners and architects choose polycarbonate. Clear polycarbonate panels can be used to lighten up a dark corner or a bronze finish can reflect heat away from the home and filters the glare.

Modek manufactures two nominal thickness specifications: 1.25 mm Nominal Thickness and 1.00mm Nominal Thickness. 1.25 mm Nominal Thickness is deemed to be the Standard Weight Specification for all industrial installations. This specification will meet the rigorous conditions found in an industrial environment - particularly that of deflection under load (positive and negative), handling on site, spanning capabilities and general robustness of profile. 1.00 mm Nominal Thickness is manufactured as a light weight PC sheet to be used mainly in those applications where exposure to wind is less, spanning requirements are less than normal, and generally lighter domestic-type applications.

Polycarbonate vs Glass

Glass weighs six times more than polycarbonate and needs constant maintenance and cleaning, whereas the impact strength of polycarbonate is 200 times higher while costing much less. Polycarbonate roofing requires only an occasional wash down with soapy water and is easy to clean without damaging the product. Polycarbonate sheets are also combined with photovoltaic (PV) roofing panels as the product is lighter and more durable than glass - Germany’s Bremer Weser Stadium is one such example.

HeatStop

Polycarbonate translucent roofing is becoming more popular as designers are modifying homes to suit the South African climate and reduce energy costs. One such product is Modek Heat Stop, an innovative development in polycarbonate translucent roof sheeting which effectively eliminates 60% of the radiated heat of the sun, resulting in a cool shaded environment. Heat Stop is a polycarbonate profiled extrusion, manufactured in South Africa, which has a co-extruded layer of UV stabilised surface protection on the weather side. Microscopic reflective particles are incorporated in the core material which create the silver colour and the reflective qualities of the product.
