The Benefits of Modek GRP Roof Sheets

GRP-image

Modek fiberglass Reinforced Polyester Sheeting, or GRP, has a number of benefits to the
construction industry:

  • Ease of handling – Modek GRP is highly scratch resistant and therefore easily handled on site
  • Non-fragility – Modek has developed Walk-on Roof Sheeting - non-fragile GRP roof lights that allow for ease of maintenance and handling
  • Durability - GRP is a very durable material and some rooflights over 40 years old are still in service.
  • Attractive appearance - Good-quality GRP rooflights are a uniquely attractive rooflighting product.
  • Resistance to degradation/damage – GRP roof sheets are highly resistant to degradation by the elements, do not rust or corrode, are unaffected by most aggressive chemicals and have a low coefficient of thermal expansion compared to other plastics, making them less subject to cracking problems at the fixing points.
  • Surface protection - MODEK’s GRP sheeting is manufactured using UV-stabilised unsaturated polyester resin and glass-fibre reinforcement material, which is then chemically bonded to a highly UV-stable gelcoat layer on the weathering surface using a technique developed in the US and licensed to MODEK. As a result, MODEK GRP sheeting is more resistant to weather, UV, chemicals, corrosion and surface abrasion than sheeting manufactured using more conventional methods of surface protection.
  • Lifespan - Testing has proven that the Modek non-peel, high-gloss gelcoat layer prevents fibres from becoming exposed during the normal lifespan of the sheet. Indeed, under normal conditions, a MODEK GRP gelcoated sheet will remain structurally sound for more than 20 years.
  • Endorsement – Modek gelcoated products carry the SABS 1150/1984 mark of approval. Modek has been active in the South African market for more than a decade and forms part of the Ampaglas Plastics Group, an industry leader in plastic extrusion.
  • Compliant with EE regulations – Modek increases natural light without affecting occupant comfort and is in line with the new Energy Efficiency in Buildings Regulations.
  • Natural light – Translucent GRP allows for the transmittance of natural light, which reduces energy consumption and improves mood and concentration

Long-term performance is dependant on the quality and thickness of the sheet and quality of the surface protection. The durability of GRP rooflights manufactured by MODEK ensures the strength of the sheet will be retained in the long term. However, impact resistance is also heavily dependant on other factors, for example method and condition of fixings, and any deterioration of the installation can jeopardise the non-fragility classification, even when there is no deterioration of the rooflight sheet itself.
